Charlotte Bobcats rookie Cody Zeller’s 2014 didn’t get off to the best start (Video)

By Dan Devine

Like many of us, plenty of NBA players said goodbye to 2013 by celebrating with friends and family, with some stepping out to attend New Year’s Eve parties and others ringing in 2014 quietly at home with a quick embrace of their loved ones. For Charlotte Bobcats rookie forward Cody Zeller, though, it sounds like the clock striking midnight coincided with him striking out:

Happy New Years!!!! I’m now 0-21 on that whole “midnight kiss” thing.

— Cody Zeller (@CodyZeller) January 1, 2014

D’awwwww. I mean, 0-for-21 seems unlikely to me — you probably got a “happy new year” peck from your mom at some point while you were just a wee li’l Zeller — but I’m sure that’s not what you’re focused on, and it’s tough to be on the road without having someone to share that magic calendar-changing moment. Sorry about that, man.

Cheer up, though, Cody — one good thing about being locked into a year of loneliness is that it almost certainly means you’re going to start finding yourself wiiiiiiide open while streaking to the basket, as you did late in the second quarter of the Bobcats’ 2014-opening trip to Staples Center to take on the Los Angeles Clippers:

Oh, man.

The rim check was one of six field-goal attempts that Zeller missed on Wednesday; he didn’t make any. (He did, however, go 6 for 6 from the foul line.) His Bobcats got blown out by a score of 56-29 in the second half, with Blake Griffin (31 points on 14 for 20 shooting, 12 rebounds), Chris Paul (17 points, 14 assists) and Jared Dudley (20 points, five assists, 6 for 9 from 3-point range) pacing the Clippers to a 112-85 victory.

Not exactly the start to 2014 that the former Indiana star was looking for. Now, if you’ll excuse Cody, he’s got to pull out the sock puppets for a few minutes; he’s just got to work through some stuff, and would appreciate it if we’d all give him some space. Hang in there, man.

Hat-tip to SB Nation’s Rodger Sherman and Ben Swanson.
